Cleaning For Your Ceramic Braces Amid Quarantine

smiling with braces

Braces are one of the top dental procedures when it comes to straightening misaligned bites, eliminating gaps between pearly whites, and helping achieve a more aesthetically pleasing smile. One of the most common types is traditional braces. These are made of gray or metallic silver brackets and wires. It also uses different colors of rubber – making it more noticeable in one’s teeth. Meanwhile, ceramic braces are also getting more popular in the Philippines as they also give the benefits of conventional braces but with a more discrete look. It is made of high-grade polycrystalline ceramic that blends into the color of the teeth. However, these ceramic braces and clear elastics are highly susceptible to color degradation.

To feel confident while wearing ceramic braces, you should maintain it clean and white just like your teeth. But with the implemented community quarantine due to the COVID-19 threat, visiting a dentist to regularly clean and adjust your braces is challenging. Many clinics are closed due to the issued social distancing guidelines and lockdown policies. To help you in cleaning and maintaining the integrity of your braces even at home, here are the following tips that you can practice:

1. Regularly brush your teeth.

This is a no-brainer but a crucial move not only to keep your braces at its best but also to maintain your oral cavity’s good health. Gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush every after a meal instead of just twice a day to prevent bacteria from building up and developing into hard-to-remove plaque. Avoid using whitening toothpaste as these usually contain strong chemicals and abrasive ingredients that may stain and damage your ceramic braces. Ask your dentist for recommendation too.

2. Floss and rinse.

Study shows that brushing can only remove about 25% of bacteria, sugar and acids in your oral cavity. There are many hard-to-reach areas and that’s why flossing and rinsing with mouthwash are important. Flossing rubs off the plaque stuck between your teeth and your ceramic braces. Meanwhile, using a mouthwash flushes out stain-causing bacteria and reduces the risk of gingivitis, keeping your ceramic braces white, and your gums healthy for faster orthodontic treatment.

3. Be mindful of your diet.

Common dental braces staining agents are found in coffee, tea, hot chocolate, red foods, and curry dishes. As per dentists in the Philippines, these acidic flavor stains stick to your ceramic braces even longer and are difficult to remove especially when you consume them regularly. To prevent this, curb your consumption so you do not have to forego you favorite food and beverages altogether. It is also best to quit smoking as your teeth are compromised when in braces, and smoking or chewing tobacco only compromises them further. Nicotine also stains teeth and braces badly. Start cutting down and then quitting altogether for your ceramic braces not to go to waste.

4. Continue to consult your dentist.

Amid quarantine, dentists in the Philippines still carry out online consultation to help their patients care for their ceramic braces even at home. Don’t be shy to ask your dentist for recommendations especially when oral cavity problems arise. Some are even willing to schedule appointments and open their clinics for their patients in need. Make sure you have your dentist’s contact number with you. Remember, professionals know best when it comes to ceramic braces and oral health maintenance. How to Take Care of Your Teeth After the Holidays?

white smile - veneers

We hope you’ve enjoyed the last bit of 2019 and welcomed 2020 with a bright smile! Talk about a bright smile, how are your teeth and gums after all the family gatherings, sumptuous meals, and endless flow of wine? Is your oral health still on its optimum health? If not, keep on reading as we’ve curated several tips on how to take care of your teeth after the busy holiday season.

For yellowed and stained teeth

Many of us are guilty of binge-eating and -drinking delicious food and sweet beverages. We can’t help it as the holiday season is best enjoyed by eating and drinking your favorites with your loved ones. However, there are some consequences such as yellowed and stained teeth. As per dentists, acidic food and drinks encourage more and faster bacteria buildup in the oral cavity – making way for stubborn stains, discoloration, and hardened plaque.

For eliminating the yellowish appearance of the teeth, whitening treatment will do. The dentist will use strong bleaching gels and innovative light technology to whiten each tooth up to five shades lighter. The treatment could be completed in just one visit and you can have guaranteed whiter pearly whites in an instant!

Meanwhile, for the hardened plaque or tartar caused by excessive bacteria buildup (due to sweet food, acidic drinks, and improper oral hygiene), it is best advised to avail deep cleaning treatment. The dentist will clean the teeth and gums by scraping the plaque and tartar with sterile dental tools. Then, special gels are used to polish the pearly whites.

For damaged teeth

Have you bit food the wrong way and chipped off your teeth? Or have you experienced an unexpected oral injury this holiday season? There are several dental treatments that can bring your damaged pearly whites back to its best shape.

Enamel contouring best works for minimal damage such as chipping or small gaps between teeth. The process involves a dental professional examining your affected tooth then shaping its enamel (protective layer of the tooth) to be even with the other teeth. This treatment can also correct gaps and minimal teeth misalignments.

Another popular procedure for damaged teeth is dental veneers. Dental veneers work by removing the damaged or decayed part of the tooth then covering it with artificial tooth-like material. Most dentists used porcelain veneers for the front part of the teeth as this type promises natural-looking and long-lasting results.

If the tooth is damaged completely, you can repair it with another tooth-like material. In this case, crowns. Dental crownsare designed as fixed prosthetic devices to cover a badly-damaged tooth. They can also act as a replacement tooth to fill the gap when a decayed tooth is extracted.

These treatments not only repair the damage on your teeth, they also improve the overall aesthetics of your smile.

For mouth sores

For stubborn oral sores that hinder the way you eat, drink and speak, ask your dentist for gels and ointments to be applied. However, if your mouth sores are complex and show signs of progressing to other dental diseases, your dentist may suggest oral surgery, too. It is best to consult a dentist immediately when one has persistent mouth sores to prevent further complications.

Taking care of your pearly whites, as well as your overall dental health, after the busy holiday season, is easy when you have good communication with your dentist. Set an appointment with your dentist today and begin 2020 with your best smile!

4 Dental Implant Cleaning Tools

dental implant cleaning

Keeping your dental implants clean, fresh, and intact is easy when you know how to properly care for them and have the necessary tools to ensure long-term gum and implant health. As per dentists from the premium dental clinic in Makati, implants need similar care to natural teeth. A regular oral health routine comprised of brushing, flossing, and rinsing can already go a long way. However, this doesn’t mean that your implants don’t need special attention. Remember, although implants look like your pearly whites, they are not made of similar elements.

Dental implants are metal posts, screws, or frames that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once attached, the dentist mounts a replacement crown typically made of compounds such as zirconia and porcelain for restoring teeth. These materials can be scratched and these scratches may harbor bacteria and lead to infection. To prevent the attack of bacteria and maintain the quality of your prosthesis, we’ve rounded up several dental tools that you may add to your oral regime.

1. Tufted Toothbrush

Instead of the traditional toothbrush, dentists recommend tufted brushes for cleaning implants. Tufted brushes have angled neck to easily access hard-to-reach surfaces, soft bristles to gently clean the implants, and a slim brush head to focus on the implant abutments. Dentists in Makati usually have this type of brushes stored in their dental clinic for their patients. You may also order here.

2. Interdental Brush

Aside from using a tufted toothbrush, keeping a handy interdental brush is a wise move, too! Interdental brushes come in different sizes that effectively clean spaces between implants and teeth with no worries of scratching and bleeding. You can also add an antibacterial cleanser or toothpaste to the tip of the brush to aid in cleaning. Get yours here.

3. Implant Floss

There are flosses specifically made for implants. They are thicker, flexible, unwaxed and have stiff ends to avoid causing unexpected scratches and injuries in the gum tissue. However, it is important to note that you must only use them upon the direction of your dentist or when your implants are fully healed. Learn more here.

4. Oral Irrigator

If you’re not into flossing, a water pick or oral irrigator would better suit your dental implant flossing needs. It works by gently irrigating your prosthesis with jets of water to clean them thoroughly. It is proven to help fight bleeding gums, inflammation, gingivitis and infection. It also prevents plaque buildup around your implant and gums. Order yours here.

These are just a few of the dental tools that you may add to your regular oral health routine to ensure long-term success for your dental implants. For additional tips and maintenance treatments to keep your implants in their best shape, visit your trusted dental clinic in Makati today!

What Happens When You Don’t Regularly Brush Your Teeth

What Happens When You Don’t Regularly Brush Your Teeth | Dental World Manila

There are some nights when you are too drunk, tired, or lazy that you go to sleep without brushing your teeth. The next day, your oral cavity feels sticky and your morning breath is worse than usual. That’s because the remnants of what you ate are still lingering inside your mouth and different kinds of bacteria are feasting on it. For just missing one of the two daily recommended brushings, millions of bad bacteria can grow overnight. If this is how fast bacteria react, imagine what would happen if you missed brushing frequently or you stop brushing for a long time! Thus, dentists from top dental clinics in Makati continuously stresses the importance of regularly brushing your teeth to avoid the following dental issues:

1. Bad Breath

Halitosis is the most common consequence of not brushing your teeth. The smell of saliva, leftover food and bacteria stay in your mouth giving off bad breath. Though people use mouthwash to eliminate this odor, it doesn’t remove or brush away bacteria that lies in your teeth, gums and gaps completely.

2. Enamel Decay

If your teeth are not brushed properly and regularly, your enamel (the protective layer of the teeth) will be prone to stains due to sugary and/or acidic food and drinks. When this happens, bacteria will feed off the leftover food and will create dental plaque. The prolonged presence of this plaque will then cause the enamel coating to break down and subject your teeth to faster decay.

3. Gingivitis

Further plaque build-up will advance to super-plaque and produce tartar that will irritate the gums. As a result, your immune system will automatically perform its inflammatory response to fight off bacteria. This will then cause the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed during brushing.

4. Periodontitis

Having gingivitis and not brushing your teeth will then put your oral cavity at risk of periodontitis. This disease will make your gum tissues too weak that it can’t hold your pearly whites anymore. If ignored, it will also create irreversible damage such as teeth, tissue and bone loss.

5. Serious Conditions

According to , consistent poor dental hygiene can ultimately contribute to infections and health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders, stroke and possibly cancer. This is because your mouth is home to many bacteria that may enter the bloodstream and affect your overall health.

To avoid these dental issues and other severe problems, dentists in Makati reminds people to regularly practice proper oral hygiene: flossing, brushing and rinsing, Here’s how:

The Effects of Vaping to Oral and Overall Health of Millenials

The Effects of Vaping to Oral and Overall Health of Millenials | Dental World Manila

Vices are very hard to resist. Even though people know the possible danger of continuing their habits, many choose to persist. Meanwhile, others are taking steps to quit their bad habits. They control their urges, talk with counseling experts, and take prescribed medicines. On the other hand, some look for safer alternatives. Thus, the rise of vapes.

Vapes, also known as e-cigarettes or Juul, are undeniably a millennial thing today. According to surveys, millennials are taking the lead to e-cig popularity, wherein they comprise 44% of vapor smokers. But, why are they attracted to this kind of cigarette? What do they contain? What are its effects, especially to dental health? Plus, are they safe? To answer these questions, we’ve asked trusted Filipino dentists from premium dental clinics nationwide.

What vapes do?

A vape is considered a fantastic alternative to traditional cigarettes. They do not contain large amounts of tobacco and don’t produce smoke. Instead, they have a bit of nicotine (derived from a tobacco plant), lesser chemicals, and create a pleasant-smelling aerosol (due to applied juices). They are battery-powered and last longer compared to lighting traditional cigarettes and buying sticks again and again. They are also popular to millennials as they can do cool tricks with the vapor smokes and still smell good after use. Plus, they are believed to propose less harm over regular cigarettes.

What are the effects of vaping?

Let’s start at the good effects first. Vapes are a great investment for many, especially when planning to gradually quit smoking regular cigarettes. All you need is one Juul and a little amount of vape juice then you can use it whenever you want. Hence, you save money while giving up on traditional cigarettes. However, professionals warn about the harmful effects too. There are some reported cases wherein vapes overheat, crack or explode then lead to accidents and injuries. Hence, having an authentic Juul and cautiously using it is very vital.

When it comes to health, research shows that vapes are safer than traditional cigarettes (due to smaller amounts of nicotine and chemicals) but this doesn’t mean they don’t propose health risks. Filipino dentists state that the nicotine ingredient may still cause excessive oral bacteria, dry mouth, irritation and cell death. Studies also show that nicotine found in vape juices plays a role in the development of periodontal diseases, bone loss, tooth loss and tooth decay.

Are they totally safe?

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, “e-cigarettes have not been fully studied, so consumers currently don’t know the potential risks of e-cigarettes when used as intended, how much nicotine or other potentially harmful chemicals are being inhaled during use, or whether there are any benefits associated with using these products.” However, ongoing clinical studies show that even the small amount of nicotine found in vape juices can still cause and worsen disorders. Plus, there are still cases of exploding e-cigarettes up to this day. Hence, Filipino dentists, remind vapor smokers to be cautious and check on their overall health.

The Bottom Line

Quitting vices is hard, that’s why alternatives easily attract us. But we have to be careful, ask for expert advice, and check our health first before risking ourselves to temporary reliefs.

Dental Clinic in Manila: A Dental World Experience

Dental Clinic in Manila: A Dental World Experience

So I was thinking of doing a blog review today and I thought that this blogpost will be very helpful for people having a hard time looking for a good Dental Clinic in Manila. It took me 3 months to decide on which Dental Clinic to visit after I moved from Bicol.

When I was still a kid, I was really scared of the dentist, but my parents never stopped forcing me to visit the clinic almost every quarter of the year. They decided to look for a new dentist when I was in grade school because they realized that it’s never going to work out between me and my previous one. So my new dentist that time was the one who helped me overcome my fear and also keep my teeth healthy.

Last 2015, I moved to Manila and it was hard for me to look for a good and trusted dentist. I was very reluctant in visiting a new clinic with a different dentist.

Side note: I guess you’re wondering why I always have to visit the dentist. I don’t have super perfect teeth but I always want my teeth to be healthy and clean. I always brush my teeth but, going to the dentist regularly to have like a major cleaning is a good practice.

These past few months, I’ve been very busy with work and I didn’t really have the time to visit my home province. (and I’m sure in the coming months it will be harder for me) I decided to look for a good dental clinic in Manila. I was looking for a complete dental shop. I had 3 choices in mind, GAOC, Dental World and CAD. I’ve read a lot of positive reviews on these clinics.

Few months ago, my sister visited Dental World to have her teeth checked by a Cosmetic Dentist, and her feedback was good. The services are a little pricey but I think having a healthy and beautiful teeth is a good investment so I decided to have my teeth checked at the nearest Dental World clinic.

They have 5 clinics in Manila:

  • St. Luke’s Medical Center – QC
  • SM City North EDSA
  • Glorietta
  • SM Mall of Asia
  • Centuria Medical Makati – Opening Soon!

My location is in Makati so I went to their Glorietta Branch. I really like how they treat their patients. So after my consultation, I visited their clinic once a week for my first month to have my teeth checked. I would recommend this clinic because they really take good care of your teeth.

I finally found a new trusted dental clinic and dentist (Dr. Mendoza) here in Manila. Thank you Dental World!

Dental Clinic Gears Up for Medical Tourism

Dental Clinic Gears Up for Medical Tourism

This down-to-earth man with a perpetual smile on his face has established himself as one of the country’s respected and well-known dental practitioners.

Travelers, especially balikbayan, OFWs and local clients have recognized the superior quality of the cosmetic dentistry in the country. It is not surprising to see patients jetting in to his clinics all over Metro Manila for a “smile-makeover holiday.”

“Healthcare costs which have skyrocketed in the developed world have led the adventurous medical tourists to look for dental clinics and hospitals in the country that have topnotch doctors, high-tech equipment and competitive costs,” says Dr. Malony Santos.

The dental clinics of Santos, who has several years of experience in dental clinic operation and administration, are gearing up to compete in the lucrative medical tourism market.

In its bid to get a slice of the growing market, Santos has put up a world–class dental healthcare complex that can serve hundreds of patients annually.

And consistent with its thrust on healthcare promotion, the M. L. Santos Dental Cosmetic and TMJ Center has launched several dental health promotion programs.

“Our clinics have established cutting-edge dental health services in the areas of dental cosmetics, implantology, prosthodontics, orthodontics, TMJ-orthopedics and general dentistry,” Santos said.

“We bring good smile to life” is the motto of Santos’ clinics, which can complete “smile makeovers” in as least seven days, making it convenient for foreign travelers, especially balikbayan on a visit, to achieve superior results at a reasonable price.

The dental clinics offer integrated, specialized and customized treatment and care using a unique multi-discipline approach.

Clients are given the utmost comfort, including complimentary pick-up and delivery during their entire visit and assistance with their travel and hotel arrangements.

Santos said his clients experience the world-famous Filipino hospitality, just as in Filipino homes and five-star hotels.

“We deliver the one thing that people want in healthcare but don’t expect to get — service,” he added.

Santos’ clinics boast of 15 doctors at a time, all of whom are experts in their respective fields of specialization, and an efficient allied medical and administrative staff.

The M. L. Santos Dental Cosmetics and TMJ Center recently inaugurated its Makati branch along Buendia Avenue.
